Walter Stringer
Died of his Wounds Wednesday 26th February 1941
Aged 54



He was born on 17th September 1886, in Sydenham, Kent (Lewisham Q4-1886 1D:1159) son of John and Alice STRINGER (née SMITH).

1891 census...Aged 3, he was at 30 Mount Ash Road, Lewisham with his father John STRINGER [32] carpenter born Battersea; his mother Alice [33] born Chasby, Berks; brother William J [4].

1901 census...Aged 14, he was at 82 Devonshire Road, Lewisham with his parents, brothers William, Edward [12] and Harold [6]; sister Nellie? [10].

1911 census...Aged 24, a painter, he was at 2 Kniver Road South, Sydenham with his widowed mother (boarding house keeper); sister Nellie (dressmaker) and brother Harold (grocer's assistant). His father had died in 1907.

In 1920, in Lewisham, he married Florence ASHWELL, (previously married to William Alfred ASHWELL her maiden name was SHAILS)

In the 1939 register he was widower, a painter, and his address was 35 Devonshire Road, Forest Hill, Lewisham, London where he lived with his son Walter J. STRINGER [20-3-1921] a motor driver.

Walter was injured in the bombing of 18th February 1941 at the "White Hart" and taken to White Lodge Emergency Hospital where he died on 26th February 1941. There is no information as to the reason for Walter being in Newmarket, or whether he was staying here or merely passing through.
The burial register has his occupation as decorator



Walter was returned to Lewisham for burial on 4th March in Lewisham (Hither Green) Cemetery grave AA/con/259
